Cape Town – Cape Town City got their first victory of the Absa Premiership season as they edged Stellenbosch FC 1-0 at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday.
The Citizens got off to the perfect start in the Cape derby as Chris David gave them the lead as early as the sixth minute after neat build-up play that involved Kermit Erasmus and Bradley Ralani.
City started the game the better of the two sides as they tried to stamp their authority on the newly promoted team with the men in blue playing at a high tempo.
The designated home team should have doubled their advantage midway through the first half when Erasmus was put through in front of goal but he was denied by Stellenbosch goalkeeper Boy de Jong while Ralani skied the follow-up over the bar.
Midfielder Zukile Kewuti was the next City player to have crack on goal but his effort went over just over the top.
Stellenbosch struggled to get into the contest but forward Iqraam Rayners was a constant threat to the City defence with his power and pace.
The team from the Cape Winelands probably received some harsh words from their coach Steve Barker at the halftime interval and they came out with more intent after the interval.
They gradually started seeing more of the ball and knew the longer the scoreline stayed the same they were still very much in the contest.
