NEW DELHI: With Prime Minister Narendra Modi directing the concerned ministries to build a global market for products made by tribals and branding them with quality standards, the government is planing to consult the Bureau of Indian Standards and Food Safety and Standard Authority.
They will explore standardisation that can be applicable for various categories of products made for sale in the tribal belts.
It is also proposed to identify large retail chains for marketing support for tribal products and non-timber forest produce in consultation with business chambers like Ficci, CII and Assocham.
The focus on tribal goods follows a review by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 9 where he is learnt to have called for coordinated efforts to build a global market for tribal products in "mission mode". While Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India, will work on value addition of products from the tribal belts and the on ground linkages to bring the products, ministry of commerce will facilitate the national and internation market linkages including the online outreach.
After a meeting on January 12 with the officials of TRIFED, ministry of tribal affairs, and ministry of minority affairs, commerce minister Piyush Goyal is learnt to have issued directions for also exploring railways as a customer and sale facilitator.
On February 9, the various stakeholders will come together to firm up the plan to execute the outreach and linkages. To promote products of TRIFED, officials have been asked to identify “design, packaging and marketing components” and also identify partners including ad-gurus and designers of repute. The officials will also be identifying clusters to initiate such activities, sources, privy to discussions and directions issued at the meeting, said.
In a video shared on Twitter on January 14, Goyal said, “Have promised PM that over the next 3 years, every Indian citizen will at least buy one product, if not more, which is produced by our tribal brothers & sisters.” Retweeting it, TRIFED MD Pravir Krishna committed to leave no stone unturned to match up to Goyals expectations.
