Rebels onto third captain for Waratahs clash as Tom English leads team

Melbourne Rebels have lost their second captain of the season to injury with breakaway Angus Cottrell out of the side to face New South Wales Waratahs.

Cottrell was the stand-in skipper for the Rebels while Haylett-Petty recovers from a toe ligament injury, but Cottrell has concussion sustained during training on Monday and made unavailable for selection this week.

Long-time Rebel Tom English will the third captain this season when he leads the side out at the SCG on Saturday night, while Rebels coach Dave Wessels has recalled breakaway Richard Hardwick for his first start this season.

Anaru Rangi, Jack Maddocks and Matt Philip all returned to the starting side after missing last game due to injury.

Hardwick has played for the Wallabies and proven himself in Super Rugby, but Wessels has pushed him to boost his fitness levels.

"I'm really pleased with Dicky's contribution in the back end of the Stormers game, he is back to full fitness which is where he needs to be," Wessels said.

"We all know he is a Wallaby. When he is on and hungry he brings a lot to the game.

"We have been pushing to get him a bit fitter, to his credit he has done that. He made some changes to get to where he needed to be. It's a competitive position and he has needed to play well and train well to get back into the mix."

Haylett-Petty and hooker Jordan Uelese are in line to be available for selection after next week's bye.

The Waratahs are coming off 10 days of drama after Israel Folau's social media posts and subsequent standing down dominated their bye-week.

Kurtley Beale looks likely to takeover from Folau at full-back as long as he has recovered from a bout of tonsilitis.

"He [Folau] is the No.1 try-scorer in the history of Super Rugby, one of the most leading entertainers in the game and for him to be lost to Australian rugby is sad," Wessels said.

"I don't think there is any winners out of it.

"Temporarily it might be a galvanising thing for the Waratahs, if I was the coach I would be thinking of a way to do that, but the reality is they have lost a world-class player forever."
