Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has emerged as a potential target for Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, reports say.
Mourinho hoped to sign at least one defender in the summer but pursuits of Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld and Diego Godin all fell through.
The Red Devils boss criticised Manchester Uniteds transfer dealings publicly and a difficult start to the season has reaffirmed his belief that defensive reinforcements are needed.

With Maguire signing a new long-term deal with Leicester City, and Alderweireld reestablishing himself in the Tottenham team, Mourinho may have to look elsewhere this winter.
And The Sun say the Portuguese boss will monitor the situation of former England defender Cahill over the next few months, with a view to possibly signing him from Chelsea in January.

Mourinho worked with Cahill at Chelsea and is fully aware of the skills he could bring to his inexperienced and leaky defence.
It is claimed Cahill, who has made just one Premier League appearance this season, has attracted attention from Championship clubs Sheffield Wednesday and Aston Villa.
But if he does leave Chelsea – which appears likely – Cahill would rather remain in the top-flight as he believes he is good enough to contribute to a Premier League team.
Cahill is currently behind David Luiz, Antonio Rudier and Andreas Christensen in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.
But despite his limited role under new manager Maurizio Sarri, striker Olivier Giroud wants Cahill to stay at the club.
