Morrison weighs in on NRL salary cap issue

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has weighed in on the NRL salary cap crisis facing his beloved Cronulla Sharks.

The NRL is investigating potential salary cap breaches at the club with the Sharks sitting fourth on the ladder heading into the finals.

Mr Morrison, Cronulla's number one ticket holder, says his "job is to run the country" and will leave it to Australian Rugby League chairman Peter Beattie to sort out the situation.

"I'm a passionate Sharkies fan but everyone has to play by the rules," Mr Morrison told reporters in Sydney on Wednesday.

"That is an important culture and value for us too."

Mr Morrison has backed his club to enter the finals in good shape by recording a win in their final regular season game on Sunday.

He has placed his faith in Sharks coach Shane Flanagan.

"''Flanno' and all the boys down there will make sure they are doing the right thing and I'm sure they will have a great win against the Bulldogs this weekend," Mr Morrison said.

Cronulla is the latest NRL club to be caught in salary cap drama following Parramatta and Manly's issues in recent seasons.

The Sharks released a statement on Tuesday stating discrepancies occurred under previous management at the club and they had self-reported the issues to the NRL.

"This is a historical issue, we are currently salary cap compliant for the 2018 season having passed our mid-season salary cap review," the club statement read.
