An entrepreneur has unveiled the world’s smallest phone, which is only a little bit bigger than a two-pound coin.
The Zanco Tiny T1 weighs in at just 13 grams, has a 0.49 inch OLED screen with a resolution of 64 x 12 pixels and can store 300 phone contacts.
The mini is even smaller than Zanco’s previous model which was 20 grams but the T1, he says ‘makes that one look like a brick’.
It’s feared the new generation of micro mobiles could be smuggled into prisons without detection.
Similar phones are openly advertised online as ‘Boss approved’, suggesting they will not activate the Boss (body orifice security scanner) chairs used for visitors and inmates in jails.
The last model was known as the ‘Fly’ and is just 2.75 inches tall – so small it fits in the palm of your hand.
But the mini is the latest brainchild of Bradford-born entrepreneur Shazad Talib, who specialises in tiny phones.
He said: ‘I came up with the idea for it in about 2004, and I’ve had engineers working on it for years. It is actually very easy to use when it is placed on your finger.
‘My next design will be for a small smartphone. I have a lot of ideas.
‘I live in China now, but I’m born and bred in Bradford, and I want to make Bradford proud.’
It will retail at £39 – although on the Kickstarter funding page investors can secure one for a ‘super early bird’ price of £30.
David Lidington, Justice Secretary, has called for a ban on the sale of small phones.
He said: ‘It’s pretty clear that miniature phones are being advertised and sold with the purpose of being smuggled.
‘That’s why today, I am calling on online retailers and trading websites to take down products that are advertised to evade detection measures in prisons.’
